A-Quarium is a fish tank simulator based on an A-Life program 'Boids' by Craig Renolds. Each fish is modelled individually with a simple algorithm. A fish will try to swim with a close neighbour if it is of the same species, and will try to swim away if it is of a different species. The behaviour of the fish tank is an emergent property of all the individual fish actions. The program can be run as a normal 'windows' program from program manager or as a screen saver by including AQuarium.scr in your windows folder, then selecting A-Quarium from the choose screen savers from within the normal windows desktop in control panel You can change the nature of your fish tank by altering the three control variables : NUMBER OF FISH minimum of 1 maximum of 60 NUMBER OF SPECIES minimum of 1 maximum of 5 FISH TO FISH INTERACTION DISTANCE: this is the maximum distance at which two fish can interact minimum 1 maximum 300 This is accomplished from the set-up item within desktop for the screen saver version or the set-up item of the options menu of the windows program. With the windows program, you can also change the nature of your fish by selecting BALL & STICK drawings or CUTE FISH icons. The ball and stick display has the advantage of more realistic fish movements while the cute fish is just plain cute. This program was written with the fabulous Visual Basic.
